Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has also hinted that his player might be leaving this summer for United while Vermaelen has told that he has no plans to leave the Emirates.
Louis van Gaal is targeting the Belgian defender since the start of the summer break and now looks set to make a bid. United have already lost two of their star center backs Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan and Rio Ferdinand to Queens Park Rangers both who served United for more than nine years. Vermaelen will be filling the gap of any one of them while van Gaal is considering another center back who can play alongside Vermaelen. Dortmund’s Mats Hummels has also strongly linked with a move to United.
Vermaelen has entered his last year of Arsenal’s contract and he is not a starter anymore. Wenger has no plans to give him a new contract and also does not want him to leave on a free transfer next summer.
The 28-year-old has played 150 games since his arrival from Ajax in 2009. He started only 7 Premier League games last season and won first trophy with Arsenal of FA Cup.
